THE MYTH: MY SKINCARE STOPPED WORKING!

The Myth: My Skincare Stopped Working!

Ever loved a skincare product for months—then suddenly decided it “wasn’t working anymore”? So you toss it and buy something new. Your skin has apparently developed product tolerance. Or has it?

Your skin isn’t bored.

When you first start using a good moisturizer, especially on dry skin, the improvement can be obvious. The outermost layer of your skin holds more water, loses less water, and becomes softer and more flexible. But here's the catch: Your skin can only improve so much. Once it reaches a healthy, comfortable level of moisturization, the dramatic improvement naturally levels off. That’s not the product failing. That’s called maintenance.

Think about exercise. Once you're fit, every workout doesn't have to make you dramatically fitter. Some workouts are simply maintaining what you've achievedSame with moisturizer. Your skin changes. Your moisturizer didn't necessarily stop working.

Winter's cold, dry air. Indoor heating. Hot showers. Aging. Hormonal changes. Even changes in how often you wash your face can affect how dry your skin feels. So the moisturizer that was perfect in July may feel a little skimpy in January. That doesn't mean your skin has “gotten used to it.” It may simply need a little more help. Try applying more. Apply it to slightly damp skin. Or, if necessary, switch to a richer moisturizer.

Beware the skincare carousel.

If your moisturizer is comfortable, effective and affordable, why keep replacing it? Every new product brings a new formulation—and potentially new ingredients that can irritate or sensitize your skin. You may spend more money, irritate your skin and end up right back where you started. Congratulations. You just bought yourself a problem.

Of course, there is an important exception: if a product starts causing irritation, itching, redness, burning or a rash, stop using it. You may have developed an irritant or allergic reaction to the product or one of its ingredients. That's not “tolerance”—that's your skin telling you something is wrong.

The FryFace Bottom Line

Your skin doesn't need constant novelty. If your skincare is working and your skin is happy, keep using it. A moisturizer doesn't have to keep producing dramatic improvements to be doing its job. Once your skin is comfortable and adequately moisturized, its job is to maintain that healthy state. Your skin isn't bored. It's just moisturized.

And if you're looking for simple, safe, effective and affordable skincare without the marketing gymnastics, the FryFace Product Selector can help you find products that do what they're supposed to do.
